This study aims to look at the effective sentences in the narrative paragraphs of the 2019 students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program. This research is included in the type of descriptive research using a qualitative approach. The data collection technique used by the researcher is the document technique, namely the student narrative paragraph. The data analysis technique in this study was carried out by sorting out effective and ineffective sentences. The results of the research that were obtained by the researcher in the narrative paragraphs of the 2019 Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program students were effective and ineffective sentences. Sentences are not effective because one or more of the conditions are not met, such as; completeness, alignment, economy, coherence, variety, accuracy of word choice and accuracy of spelling. Ineffective sentences that are often found by researchers are not well patterned, meaning that the sentences written are incomplete so that the sentences are not formed properly, the use of prepositions, the use of capital letters and punctuation is not appropriate. In addition, the researcher also obtained sentences that did not have cohesiveness and frugality, causing a waste of words.
