The Effectiviness of Musa balbisiana Peel Extract Against Aeromonas salmonicida The Causal Agent of Furunculosis on Fish

Abstract

The diseases in aquaculture is a problem that reduce aquaculture production. The handling of infectious disease on fish using synthetic antibiotics are susceptible for resistance and residues. using local ingredients as a source of active herbal compounds for synthetic drug’s substitution is an interesting thing to study. The plant with high waste in Tanjungpinang is Musa balbisiana’s peel. The use of waste material needs to maintain the carrying capacity of environment. This study aims to screen the potential of local raw materials as herbal ingredients for synthetic antibiotic substitution. This study included the screening of active herbal compounds with the extraction method using ethanol, characterization of phytochemical, and testing of antibacterial activity of extract against Aeromonas salmonicida using agar diffusion method. The concentration of extract starts with 10.000 ppm, 30.000 ppm and 50.000 ppm. To see the extract effect on the test, the inhibition zone was measured quantitatively and being analyzed using One Way ANOVA and Tukey Test. The results of this study are the extracts from every 500 g of sample is 11.29 g with a yield percentage is 2.26% and positively contains Steroid and Triterpenoid compounds. The average inhibition zone of extract against A salmonicida at the concentration of 10,000 ppm is 12.33 mm, 30,000 ppm is 39.33 mm and 50,000 ppm is 11 mm. The conclusion of this study is the ethanol extract of M balbisiana’s peel has the potential as an active herbal ingredient that inhibits A salmonicida bacteria, the causal of furunculosis on fish.
